This is intended to provide Homeowners with a basic understanding of electrical system
grounding and bonding.

The main grounding system
consists of grounding the neutral incoming wire and the neutral wire of
the branch circuits. The equipment ground consists of grounding the metal parts of the service
entrance, such as the meter can, as well as the service entrance riser.

Loose or no grounding at any point can result in a person providing a more effective route to ground
than the intended ground, resulting in electrocution.

The main grounding consist of at least two 8 foot by 5/8 inch copper ground rods driven into the
ground at least 6’ apart.  The grounding cable must be sized to the service and connected by a
continuous cable with ground clamps to the grounding rods.  Bonding of any metal pipe systems is
highly recommended to remove dangerous voltage on metal parts from a ground fault, electrically
conductive metal water piping systems, metal sprinkler piping and metal gas piping that are likely to
become energized, must be bonded to an effective ground-fault current path.
